Sealants
Dental sealants are a thin coating that is applied to the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the posterior teeth to protect them from tooth decay. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces from tooth decay by keeping germs and food particles out of these grooves.
A sealant can last for as long as 5 to 10 years. Sealants should be checked at each regular dental appointment and can be replaced if needed.

Dental sealants are a thin coating that is applied to the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from tooth decay. Most tooth decay in children and teens occur on these surfaces. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces from tooth decay by keeping germs and food particles out of these grooves.
Permanent molars are most likely to benefit from sealants. The first molars usually come into the mouth when a child is about 6 years old. Second molars appear at about age 12. It is best if the sealant is applied soon after the teeth have erupted, before they have a chance to decay.
Applying sealants does not require drilling or removing tooth structure. The process is short and easy. After the tooth is cleaned, a special gel is placed on the chewing surface for a few seconds. The tooth is then washed off and dried. Then, the sealant is placed on the tooth. The dentist or dental hygienist then shines a light on the tooth to harden the sealant.
Sealants can only be seen up close. Sealants can be clear, white, or slightly tinted, and usually are not seen when a child talks or smiles.
As with anything new that is placed in the mouth, a child may feel the sealant with the tongue. Sealants, however, are very thin and only fill the pits and grooves of molar teeth.
A sealant can last for as long as 5 to 10 years. Sealants should be checked at each regular dental appointment and can be reapplied if they are no longer in place.

In the past, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you’d probably lose that tooth. Today, with a special dental procedure called root canal treatment, your tooth can be saved. Root canals are relatively simple procedures, with little or no discomfort, involving one to three office visits. Best of all, having a root canal when necessary can save your tooth and your smile!
When a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity, bacteria can enter the pulp tissue and germs can cause an infection inside the tooth. If left untreated, an abscess may form. If the infected tissue is not removed, pain and swelling can result. This can injure your jawbones and can be detrimental to your overall health. Without the proper treatment, your tooth may have to be removed.
Signs you may need a root canal include severe toothache, pain upon chewing or application of pressure, prolonged sensitivity or pain to hot and cold temperatures, a dark discoloration of the tooth, and swelling and tenderness in gums.
Root canal treatment consists of several steps that often take place over several office visits, depending on your individual situation.
• First, an opening is made through the back of a front tooth or the crown of a molar or pre-molar.
• After the diseased pulp is removed (a pulpectomy), the pulp chamber and root canals are cleaned, enlarged and shaped in preparation for being filled.
• If more than one visit is needed, a temporary filling is placed in the crown opening to protect the tooth between dental visits.
• The temporary filling is removed and the pulp chamber and root canal permanently filled. A tapered, rubbery material called gutta-percha is inserted into each of the canals and is often sealed into place with cement. Sometimes a metal or plastic rod is placed in the canal for structural support.
• In the final step, a crown is usually placed over the tooth to restore its natural shape and appearance. If the tooth is very broken down, a post may be required to build it up prior to placing a crown.
With proper care, your restored tooth can last a lifetime. Because tooth decay can still occur in treated teeth, good oral hygiene and regular dental exams are necessary to prevent further problems.

A fixed bridge can fill space of missing teeth, prevent other teeth from drifting out of position, restore chewing and speaking ability and bring back your smile.
Getting a bridge may require two or more visits. The two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to allow for a crown. Next, a mold is made which will be sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge will be fabricated. In addition, a temporary bridge may be made and worn for several weeks until the permanent bridge is ready.
At the second visit, your permanent bridge will be checked and adjusted to achieve a proper fit. Regular dental visits, proper brushing and flossing with help to extend the life of your new bridge.
Implants
Dental implants are the new standard of care for tooth replacement. They are a “man-made root” that bond with healthy bone and provide permanent support for dental crowns and dentures. A missing tooth can be replaced by a dental implant without altering the healthy adjacent teeth. Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth and can last a lifetime.

Implants are an excellent alternative to replace missing teeth for several reasons. They look very natural and can significantly enhance your smile. Dr. Matt Nehl earned the distinction of Mastership status from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) on March 26, 2013. Dr. Nehl had previously obtained Fellowship status in 2011 from the ICOI.
The International Congress of Oral Implantologists is a non-profit worldwide dental educational organization. It is dedicated to communicating scientific knowledge and improving the clinical practice of dental implantology.
The awarding of Mastership status is an honor which a professional society such as the ICOI bestows on a dental professional involved in dental implant treatment. The ICOl’s Mastership program encourages active members to achieve their Mastership status through efforts in education, research, and actual clinical experience. Mastership candidates must submit documentation of numerous completed implant cases, letters of recommendation from ICOI Diplomates or Advanced Credential Committees, and must meet continuing education requirements. There are currently 213 dentists of the 25,000 worldwide members and associates of the ICOI that are at the Mastership status.
In addition, Dr. Nehl is a graduate of and has Fellowship status with the Misch International Implant Institute, and has completed over 350 hours of continuing education related to implant dentistry.
The process of getting implants may involve several visits in our office. Generally, the first step is a 3-D cone beam scan which is taken to evaluate existing bone and enables Dr. Nehl to provide a comprehensive treatment plan. Dr. Nehl will discuss caring for your implants once they are in place.

While your denture is being fabricated, a temporary pre fabricated denture is inserted over your empty sockets. This temporary denture can help to reduce pain as well.
Overdentures are removable replacement teeth that are inserted over your natural teeth. The overdenture is commonly used for patients who have had a root canal. Your crowns may be cut off at gum line and a removable overdenture is placed over the remaining teeth.
Implant-retained dentures are permanent dentures are secured into your mouth with a titanium screw, drilled into the bone. Partial Dentures: If you are missing just a few teeth or if you have at least two teeth on either sides of the arch, you could be a candidate for a removable partial denture. A patient with gingivitis may have red and puffy gums, and they will most likely bleed when they brush their teeth. Generally, gingivitis can be resolved with more frequent brushing and flossing as well as maintaining routine appointments. Some people find that using an antiseptic mouthwash also helps.

Gums can separate from the teeth, forming pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) that become infected. The pockets can deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Often, this process has very mild symptoms. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.
